Documents Required for Work Permit under Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program

By 2 August 2024No Comments

The Start-Up Visa (SUV) program is an innovative pathway for entrepreneurs to immigrate to Canada while establishing and growing their businesses. As part of this process, applicants often need to obtain a work permit to begin their entrepreneurial journey in Canada. To navigate the application process effectively, it is essential to gather and present specific documents that demonstrate both the establishment of your business and your qualifications for the proposed job.

Here are the key documents required for the SUV work permit Application:

1. Proof of Permanent Residence Application

What is it? A confirmation that you’ve submitted your permanent residence application through the SUV Program.

Accepted Proofs:

  • Letter of Acknowledgment: A confirmation from immigration authorities.
  • Courier Receipt: Documentation showing you mailed your application package.
  • Online Submission Confirmation: Evidence of your application submission and fee payment.

2. Letter of Support from a Designated Organization

What is it? A letter issued by a designated Canadian organization such as a venture capital fund, angel investor group, or business incubator, is crucial. It confirms your eligibility for the SUV program and supports your business venture, providing credibility to your application.

Why is it important? It confirms your eligibility for the SUV Program.

3. Offer of Employment Number

What is it? An identification number associated with your job offer.

Where to find it? In the Employer Portal after submitting your offer online. If you applied by email, use form IMM 5802 and the payment receipt for the employer compliance fee.

4. Proof of Sufficient Funds

You must provide evidence that you have adequate financial resources to support yourself and your family during your stay in Canada. The minimum funds required vary by family size, as follows:

  • For a family of 1: $29,380 CAD

  • Valid Police Certificate: To demonstrate good character.
  • Business Plan: Outlining your strategy and progress in starting operations.
  • Staffing Plan: Detailing your hiring strategy.

7. Forms

You may also need to complete several forms, including:

  • Application to Change Conditions, Extend Your Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker (IMM 5710): Complete this form for extension or change of conditions.
  • Family Information (IMM 5707): If you’re 18 years or older or a minor traveling alone to Canada, fill out this form.

  • Authority to Release Personal Information to a Designated Individual (IMM 5475): Use this form if you authorize the release of information to someone other than yourself.

Proof of Business Establishment in Canada

In addition to the above documents, you must provide proof that your business is established and operational within Canada. This is crucial for validating the legitimacy of your business venture and demonstrating your commitment to the Canadian business ecosystem.

Acceptable Forms of Proof

Several documents can serve as proof of business establishment:

  • Business Registration: This includes federal incorporation documents or provincial/territorial registration certificates.
  • Business Number (BN): Documentation showing your 9-digit Business Number assigned by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • Financial Reports: Recent financial statements, bank statements, and tax returns.
Business Licenses and Permits: Municipal business licenses and industry-specific permits.
  • Commercial Lease Agreement: If applicable, a copy of your lease agreement for your business location.
  • Proof of Business Activities: Contracts, invoices, and marketing materials.
  • Letter from a Designated Organization: If you have support from a designated organization, include their letter of support.

Best Practices for Presenting Proof of Business Establishment

  • Organize documents chronologically: This helps tell the story of your business’s establishment and growth.
  • Provide a cover letter: Summarize the documents you’re submitting and explain how they prove your business’s establishment in Canada.
  • Ensure clarity and legibility: All documents should be clear, legible, and properly translated if not in English or French.
  • Be comprehensive: While you don’t need to provide every possible document, a well-rounded selection strengthens your application.
  • Stay updated: Ensure all documents are current and reflect the most recent status of your business.
