Types of Childcare Services
Childcare Services encompass a broad spectrum of jobs that cater to the various requirements of children when their guardians or parents are not available due to work or other commitments. The services also vary in age groups, structures, and settings.
Early Childhood Educators (ECE) Stream
The stream aims at individuals with formal education and training in early childhood education. The minimum education criteria are diplomas or degrees in ECE with relevant work experience. The stream targets deserving candidates who can contribute to childcare education and learning.
ECE Assistants Stream
The stream targets individuals who can support ECE professionals in childcare settings. The candidates must have relevant experience and qualifications in assisting childcare educators, either diplomas or degrees. Although the qualification is less rigorous than the ECE stream, candidates must demonstrate appropriate qualifications and a certain level of professional training in the field.
Infant/Toddler Educators
The stream targets individuals who have specialization and training in caring for infants. The candidate must demonstrate certificates in handling young children.
BC PNP Childcare Occupations
The stream targets individuals who have specialization and training in caring for infants. The candidate must demonstrate certificates in handling young children.

BC PNP Childcare Category Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for BC PNP Childcare, applicants must meet specific criteria outlined by the province.
Early Childhood Educators (ECE) and Educators Assistants (ECEA) must demonstrate relevant certification to work in licensed child-care programs. There are primarily five levels of certification:
- ECE – one year
- ECE – five year
- ECEA
- Infant Toddler Educator (ITE)
- Special Needs Educator (SNE)
In addition, ECEs must have finished a 2–4-year college program in early childhood education or a bachelor’s degree in child development. The candidates must also possess a license issued by B.C.
An ECEA must have finished secondary school and finished an early childhood education assistant certificate program or post-secondary education in early childhood education. Relevant experience in childcare is a plus. Also, candidates must possess a license issued by a provincial or territorial association for early childhood educators.
