Summary of Targeted Express Entry Draws

The introduction of category-based selection draws in the Express Entry system is a notable addition that aims to target candidates in specific occupational fields and those possessing in-demand skills. This new feature allows for a more targeted approach to selecting candidates.

There are six distinct categories that are now eligible for consideration: Healthcare, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions, Trades, Transport, Agriculture and Agri-food, and individuals with strong French-language proficiency.

These category-based selection draws were made possible following changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act in June 2022. These changes granted the immigration minister the authority to invite economic immigrants based on their specific skills, which align with Canada’s economic priorities or promote the French language outside of Quebec.
