As of June 8, 2023, the Express Entry Pool, managed by IRCC, consists of 222,166 candidates. These candidates are from the three primary economic immigration programs under the Express Entry system.
New Category-Based Selection & Targeted Express Entry Draws
IRCC has recently introduced a new category-based selection for candidates in Express Entry programs. This announcement comes almost a year after the passing of Bill-C19 granting the immigration minister the authority to invite Express Entry candidates with specific attributes that support Canada’s economic goals. While targeted draws were anticipated this year, the official selection criteria had not been disclosed by IRCC until now.
In light of this development, here are answers to some important questions that Express Entry candidates may have regarding the new selection categories:
Who is eligible?
Express Entry candidates will be eligible for the new draw categories if they have work experience in the following fields:
- Healthcare
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
- Transport
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Strong French language proficiency (at least NCLC 7 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking)

When will the targeted draws start?
Targeted draws under the new categories are scheduled to begin later this summer, although an exact date has not been provided yet.
Do I still need an Express Entry profile if I work in one of the eligible occupations?
Yes, candidates must still meet the eligibility criteria for an Express Entry managed program. The eligible programs include the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Will the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) no longer be considered in Express Entry?
The candidate’s CRS score will still be relevant for Express Entry draws. IRCC will continue to hold draws where candidates are invited without reference to the new categories. This can include all-program draws or program-specific draws.

Book a Consultation6 Ways to Get an Invitation with a Low CRS Score
When aiming to boost your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for the Express Entry system, there are alternative strategies that can provide you with an advantage. Here are six unconventional methods to enhance your CRS score and increase the likelihood of receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residency in Canada.
1. Targeted Express Entry

However, it’s important to note that only specific eligible candidates can apply for this category. 2. PNP Immigration
A provincial nomination holds significant value within the Express Entry system as it can significantly increase your CRS score. Each province and territory in Canada has its own immigration programs, and securing a nomination through one of these programs can greatly enhance your profile. To make the most of this opportunity, it is essential to explore the eligibility criteria and requirements of different provincial nomination programs. By understanding these criteria, you can identify the program that best aligns with your skills and qualifications.

3. LMIA-Based Job
Acquiring a job offer backed by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) brings numerous benefits to the immigration process. Firstly, it allows individuals to work in Canada with a legitimate work permit, enabling them to gain valuable experience and exposure within the Canadian job market. This experience not only contributes to professional growth but also boosts their CRS score, making them more competitive in the Express Entry pool.

4. Study Permit and PGWP in Canada
Obtaining a Canadian Study Permit Visa has become a popular choice for individuals with lower Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores. This option allows them to pursue their studies in Canada and opens up opportunities for gaining valuable work experience through the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. Additionally, the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under the Express Entry system provides a pathway to permanent residency for those with Canadian work experience. To maximize the benefits, it is essential to select a program that aligns with your career goals and interests.

5. Visitor Visa to Work Permit
Individuals who hold a visitor visa for Canada have options to transition from visitor status to obtaining a work permit and legally working in the country. This transition can be accomplished by securing employment with a Canadian company authorized to hire foreign workers or by exploring work opportunities through personal connections. It is important to have a clear understanding of the requirements and eligibility criteria for each work permit category to ensure a seamless transition.

6. French Language
Proficiency in the French language can have a substantial impact on your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, potentially providing an additional 50 points. This is particularly beneficial for candidates whose scores fall within the range of 450 to 470.
Additionally, under the Targeted Express Entry Draws, French-speaking immigrants will have the advantage of requiring a lower CRS score being one of the six eligible categories. This creates a favorable situation for French-speaking individuals as they have increased opportunities to secure an invitation for permanent residency in Canada.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that the Canada Immigration Levels Plan 2023–2025 has set aside more than 4% of the immigration quota specifically for Francophone immigration. This emphasizes the importance and benefits of being a French-speaking candidate in the Express Entry system.
