Canada’s New Caregiver Pilot Programs Will Open On March 31, 2025

By 31 January 2025No Comments

Canada has introduced two new caregiver pilot programs to help families and address the need for home care workers will open on March 31, 2025.

These programs will replace the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot, which ended on June 17, 2024. The new programs aim to make it easier for caregivers to come to Canada, work, and become permanent residents right away.

The enhanced pilots aim to simplify the process for caregivers, allowing them to secure employment with organizations that offer temporary or part-time care to semi-independent individuals or recovering from health issues.

What’s New in the Caregiver Pilot Programs 2025

On-Arrival PR for Caregivers

Caregivers will get permanent resident status as soon as they arrive in Canada, giving them and their families more stability.

More Job Options

Caregivers can now work for organizations that offer part-time or temporary care, such as helping people recovering from illness or injury, or those who need some support but are mostly independent.

Easier to Qualify

To apply, caregivers need to:

  • Have basic English or French skills (Level 4 on Canada’s language test).
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have recent experience in caregiving.
  • Have a full-time job offer in home care.

What Officials Are Saying

Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship:
“Caregivers are essential to Canadian families, and these new programs reflect their important role. They will not only support caregivers but also ensure families get the care they need as we work toward making these programs permanent.”

Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business:
“After listening to caregivers across Canada, we’re taking action to support them. For years, caregivers have cared for our loved ones. Now, it’s time to give them the support they deserve.”

Impact of New Caregiver Pilot Programs Canada

  • Replacing Old Programs: The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot, which started in 2019, are ending this month. So far, nearly 5,700 caregivers and their families have become permanent residents through these programs.
  • Clearing Backlogs: In 2014, Canada had a backlog of over 60,000 caregiver applications. Today, less than 1% of that backlog remains.
  • Immigration Goals: Canada plans to welcome over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents between 2024 and 2026.
