A new application intake process for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship (PGP 2022), has just been announced by Canada. A total of 23,100 interested potential sponsors will receive invitations to apply over the next two weeks from Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
This figure will allow IRCC to accept up to 15,000 complete applications for sponsorship under the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program 2022. The invitation process will begin later this week.
IRCC will make a selection from individuals who indicated an interest to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents in autumn 2020. A total of 155,000 potential sponsors remain in the pool, according to IRCC.
In Autumn 2020, sponsors were given three weeks to indicate their interest through an IRCC website form. A lottery was then held by IRCC and some 10,000 applications were accepted for the PGP 2020. Some 30,000 applications were accepted for the PGP 2021 last year from the same pool.

Book a ConsultationKey Eligibility Factor for PGP 2022
A key eligibility factor for the PGP is the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). After expressing interest in sponsorship via the online form, proof of necessary income must be provided. The application will be rejected for applicants who do not meet the minimum necessary income requirement after being selected and invited to apply.
In all provinces and territories across Canada (with the exception of Quebec), sponsors and co-signers will be required to submit Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the three tax years prior to applying for the program.
To confirm that they meet the minimum income requirements, sponsors will need to determine the size of their family, including all persons for whom they will be financially responsible as sponsors. These members include:
- interested sponsor
- dependent children
- spouse’s or partner’s dependent children
spouse or common-law partner - any other person the interested sponsor may have sponsored in the past, for whom they’re still financially responsible
- parents and grandparents they want to sponsor and their dependents (spouse or partner and dependent children)
- any dependent children who won’t come to Canada with their parents or grandparents
- parent or grandparent’s spouse or partner, even if they won’t come to Canada
- parent or grandparents’ separated spouse

IRCC to Reduce MNI Threshhold for PGP Applicants
The IRCC is reducing its MNI thresholds for the calendar years 2021 and 2020 by 30% in comparison to what they would ordinarily be due to the loss of income that many people have endured during the coronavirus outbreak. A sponsor’s income may also be used in the calculation of regular Employment Insurance benefits and temporary COVID-19 benefits (such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit).

For inhabitants of all Canadian provinces, excluding Quebec, the undertaking for parents and grandparents is 20 years. It is valid for a period of ten years for Quebec citizens.
