Manitoba Work Permit Extension 2024

By 6 September 2024No Comments

In a move aimed at addressing labour shortages and retaining skilled workers, the Manitoba government has announced a significant expansion of its work permit program for 2024. Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino revealed the initiative, dubbed the “Manitoba Work Permit Extension 2024,” which will support the extension of work permits for temporary residents eligible under the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP).

Key Points of the Manitoba Work Permit Extension 2024

  • Up to 6,700 temporary workers will be eligible to continue working in Manitoba while their MPNP applications are processed.
  • The program is expected to provide a pathway to permanent residency within two years for eligible candidates.
  • Five new temporary full-time positions will be added to support the increased processing demands.

Minister Marcelino emphasized the program’s importance, stating,

“At a time when skilled labour is in high demand, our government is ensuring that people who are already in the province, who have contributed economically and who have expressed a desire to call Manitoba home are given that opportunity.”

The Manitoba Work Permit Extension 2024 is set to address several key areas:

  • Expedited Processing: The new positions will focus on accelerating application processing, particularly for individuals whose status in Canada is nearing expiration.
  • Quota Utilization: The program aims to fully utilize the 2024 allocation of 9,500 nominees as quickly as possible.
  • Economic Impact: By retaining skilled workers, the province expects to see positive effects on various sectors facing labour shortages.
  • Federal Alignment: This initiative aligns with broader federal immigration objectives, contributing to Canada’s target of welcoming 500,000 new permanent residents annually by 2025.

Implications and Next Steps

For employers, the Manitoba Work Permit Extension 2024 promises increased workforce stability and reduced recruitment costs. Temporary workers will benefit from extended job security and a clearer path to permanent residency.
