Latest Targeted Express Entry Draws for French and STEM Categories

Canada has recently improved its immigration process through two Latest Express Entry draws, rounds #273 and #274. These draws were designed to target specific skills and language abilities in high demand in the country. This change in the immigration process aims to bring in more skilled workers to meet the growing demand in Canada.

Express Entry Draw #273, conducted on December 7, 2023, marked a milestone for French-language speakers. With a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 470, the draw issued 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITA) to candidates demonstrating French-language proficiency. This draw aligns with Canada’s commitment to supporting bilingualism and reflects the value placed on French language skills in the Canadian labour market.

Following closely, Express Entry Draw #274 occurred on December 8, 2023, focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) occupations. A total of 5,900 ITAs were offered to candidates with a minimum CRS score of 481, signifying the third Express Entry draw of the month. This STEM-specific draw highlights Canada’s strategic approach to attracting and retaining talent in sectors critical for innovation and economic growth.

Category-Based Express Entry

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a new method of category-based selection on May 31, 2023, allowing for targeted invitations to prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training, or language abilities. These category-based draws, which commenced on June 28, 2023, are expected to continue, diversifying the pool of immigrants and addressing particular labour market needs.

Who Qualifies for this French Speaking Category?

To be eligible for this category as per the IRCC, candidates are required to:

  • Possess French-language test results demonstrating a score of at least 7 across all four language competencies, as per the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).
  • Fulfill every criterion outlined in the instructions for the specific draw.

Eligibility Requirements for Targeted Express Entry Draw in 2023

The IRCC has finalized new category-based selection criteria for Express Entry draws based on labor market projections and consultations with various stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments. The new criteria include:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare Occupations
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations
  • Skilled Trade occupations
  • Transport occupations (including Truck Drivers)
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations

You must also meet all the eligibility requirements for one of the three economic immigration programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). IRCC selects qualified candidates from the Express Entry pool based on specific categories.
